Summer is upon us.
We’re all planning holidays around the globe, but there’s a lot to be said for exploring your own country.
We took a trip the Waterford for a fabulous staycation – here’s everything you need to know about the Déise before heading down.
Where to stay
Escape to the seaside town of Tramore, Co.Waterford and book yourself into the aptly named Majestic Hotel.
This four-star hotel is just a short stroll from the picturesque Tramore beach and only 10km from the city.
I stayed in the gorgeous Sea View room, however, with Family rooms and Lakeview suites also on offer, there’s plenty to choose from. With friendly staff and delicious food, it’s easy to sit back and feel relaxed at the Majestic Hotel.
What to do
From its vibrant city life to its rural charm and stunning coastline, Waterford oozes charm with plenty to discover. To start, book a guided tour of the House of Waterford Crystal. Here, you will get a first-hand glance into the making of Waterford Crystal including the blowing department, the cutting department, sculpting, engraving and more.
If a history lesson is more your thing, check out the EPIC guided walking tour of the Viking Triangle which gives you access to five national monuments. Finally, learn what it means to be a true Viking through the power of Virtual Reality by visiting the handcrafted replica Viking house.
Away from the city, take in the breathtaking views of the Copper Coast, a UNESCO Global Geo Park and try out The Hot Pod Experience at Kilmurrin Cove. While back at Tramore the authentic LAFCADIO HEARN JAPANESE GARDENS which reflect the life of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) are also a must-see!
Where to eat
If you plan on venturing out from your hotel bar, the Bodega Restaurant in Waterford City is an absolute must. This award-winning Mediterranean restaurant champions local produce, served in international meat and seafood dishes. Five courses later, you could say I was struggling to move. The staff and food were both five stars all around.
