Mundy has shared his very honest opinion of Ed Sheeran’s Galway Girl, having had a hit song of the same name.
The Offaly singer covered Steve Earle’s Galway Girl back in 2006, and it became a massive hit.
Speaking to Beat, Mundy accused Ed of giving the song the same name for publicity.
“I just thought it was a really weird idea but I suppose we live in a world of marketing and advertising and I think he perked up a lot of ears with people thinking it was going to be the original Galway Girl.
“It kinda created it’s own promotion.”
The 42-year-old singer also admitted be isn’t a big fan of Ed’s track.
“I’m not mad about the track if I’m honest, I don’t think it’s as good as Galway Girl.
“Like fair play to him, it’s doing great but there’s another 31 counties in Ireland he could have used.”
He also admitted that his cover of the Steve Earle song was an accidental hit.
“With Galway Girl, it was a bit of a fluke. We had no intentions of it being a single but it just sort of took off itself on iTunes,” he said.
It was originally recorded during Mundy’s gig in Vicar St in 2006 and later became one of the most downloaded songs in Ireland after it was featured in a Bulmers ad and in the film adaption of P.S I Love You.
Somehow we don’t think Ed and Mundy will be planning a mash-up of the two songs anytime soon!
