5 of Ireland’s best markets to check out this summer

As much as we love a jam-packed weekend full of activities, there is something to be said for a more leisurely pace once we clock off work on a Friday afternoon.

So, if you’re heading off on a staycation or are staying put this weekend, visiting a local market is a great way to chill out, grab a coffee, spend some time in the sun and who knows, you may find some treasures along the way!

Here are some of our favourite markets that we’ll be visiting this summer as soon as we get the chance.

Clonakilty’s Friday Market, Pearse Street, Clonakilty

Right in the centre of this quaint Cork village, this little market thrives on their organic produce and homemade items like cheese, soap and stone baked pizza.

It’s on every Friday from 9-2 and is also a great day with the kids as there’s crepe stalls and often some live music too for a bit of atmosphere.

Glasnevin Farmer’s Market

If you feel like a slow start to the weekend then why not check out the farmer’s market in Glasnevin? It’s the ideal place to stock up on breakfast and snacks for the weekend with stalls selling fresh produce, bread, flowers, olives, fish, whatever you might need!

Of course, most importantly, there are lots of spots here to grab a coffee and a pastry too, ideal to accompany you on a stroll around the Botanic Gardens which is close by. The market is open every Saturday from 9-3.

English Market, County Cork

Possibly the most infamous, and oldest market in the country is the English Market in Cork city. Since 1788 it’s stalls have been offering up fresh food and produce to the people of Cork.

As well as being a great place to grab the essentials, it’s also a fab spot for a stroll with it’s beautiful architecture and is ideal for a bit of weekend people watching.

St. George’s Market, Belfast

Now to head up North! St George’s Market was set up in 1890 but there are records of it being in operation as far back as 1604.

With stalls selling fresh produce, gourmet food, hot food stalls as well as clothing and gifting, there is something here for everyone! The market is open all weekend from Friday through to Sunday.

The Milk Market, Limerick

This market Is an institution in Limerick city, visited by people all over the county and the country for that matter. Always bustling with people and vendors alike, this is the place to be any given weekend. There are multiple stalls full of fresh fruit and vegetables, guaranteeing “farm to fork” with every bite.

They also have stalls for cheese, handmade items, flowers and jewellery and there is never a shortage of live music as the regular buskers are around every corner!
