Nicky Byrne has revealed he’s doing Eurovision for his dad this year, as he was such a massive fan of the singing competition.
The presenter admitted that his dad, who died of a heart attack in 2009, has been “working overtime” in heaven to ensure he was given the chance to sing for Ireland this year.
Speaking to the Sun, Nicky said, “My dad is six years dead this November but I sometimes wonder are the stars aligned this year.
“My dad was such a fan of the Eurovision, he would love this.
“I actually feel he was in the room when we wrote the song that would be our Eurovision entry, Sunlight.”
The Dubliner recalled memories of watching the show with his dad, and “dancing around the sitting room as a nine year old in a tricolour sweatshirt when Johnny Logan won it in.”
Nicky also revealed that despite having his own radio show, he’s in no hurry to play the Irish entry on the air waves.
He said, “It will be weird me saying, ’Now here’s a song by myself’. But I know Dan Healy, the head of 2FM, loves the song, so if it’s playlisted by 2Fm, I won’t be dragging it in, it’ll be on a list of songs that we’re playing.
“We do that kind of show where we could have a laugh playing it, but we might decide not to play the track on our show and leave it to the Breakfast Show and everybody else.”
