Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have been awarded the freedom of Dublin, following a majority vote by councillors last night.
The award recognises the contribution of important visitors and their influence over people in the city.
The motion was passed after the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Brendan Carr, suggested the Obama’s to highlight their “moderating and progressive” efforts around the world.
The Lord Mayor tweeted the news, saying, “I am delighted that Dublin City Council will confer the Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin on Barack and Michelle Obama.”
According to RTE, the couple may use the awards ceremony as a chance to get back to Ireland following their trip to Moneygall, Co. Offaly back in 2011.
