At Home With James Kavanagh: “I’d ban electric lights if I could.”

Some our favourite stars around the country have been opening their doors to VIP, allowing us inside their humble abode.

Welcoming us in with open arms, we’ve discovered how they turned a house into a home, checked out their gorgeous interiors, discovered where they spent and where they saved and what they wish they’d have done differently.

This week, we chat to Instagram sensation, and interior magpie, James Kavanagh.

James, how would you describe your interior aesthetic?
Marie Antoinette meets COS. A total contradiction, I know, but I actually don’t feel I’ve NAILED my vibe just yet.

What has been your biggest splurge/investment piece?
My very large collection of candelabra. There is nothing more gorgeous or flattering than candlelight. I’d ban electric lights if I could.

Favourite homeware brand?

I’m a HUGE fan of Homesense & TK Maxx for amazing finds. I got a stunning ceramic Ralph Lauren lamp for like €50 in Homesense.

Favourite place to shop for budget interiors?
As above, or Oxfam Home.

Where to spend vs where to save?
Brown Thomas Home, or Homesense.

Any interior decorating regrets?

I had an almighty obsession with religious iconography growing up. Covered the walls with crucifixes and pics of Jesus. SO over it now.

Your top tips for making a house a home?

Scented candles. I like vanilla or sandalwood for sitting room, hall & bedroom. Citrus vibes for the bathroom.

What current trend are you tired of seeing?

Rose gold.

What’s your favourite room in the house?
My bedroom. I spend as much time as I can in bed.

Do you have a set colour palette throughout the house?

Unfortunately it’s beige at the moment – the perils of living in a rented house.

Do you and William have different interior styles? If so how did you find a happy medium?

We’re deffo verging on getting our ‘adult’ home soon. One thing I really want is separate bedrooms. Like The Queen & Prince Philip in The Crown. That, to me, is IDEAL. We can keep our interior styles and have occasional sleepovers.
