Veteran RTE broadcaster Valerie Cox described her career as “wonderful” as she announced her retirement today.

Revealing she is leaving the station after many years of service on RTE’s Today with Sean O’Rourke today, Valerie said she only has good memories.

But she added that she hopes it’s not the last people have heard of her:

“I’ve had wonderful years in RTE, I hope to have more,” she said. “I have worked with the most wonderful people over the years”, saying she worked with a “team of the most creative, intelligent, incisive people.”

Valerie and her husband Brian will feature on on RTE’s Would You Believe next Sunday at 10.30pm, to show their experiences in Greece, where they travelled to help Syrian refugees.

“Brian my husband and I were very upset about how they were treated so we travelled over,” she explained. “We were mainly working sitting on the beaches at night making sure they had clothes.”

The broadcaster’s retirement comes after a difficult time for her family, after her Garda son Eoin (35) was attacked while he was on duty.

The brave Garda is recovering from the assault in Ballinteer, Co Dublin, which left him with a suspected fracture of his shoulder and concussion.
