The number of complaints made about Irish influencers Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland has risen from last year.

A total of 33 complaints were made about influencer transparency when it comes to product placement.

This tripled from 2016, when only 11 complaints were made, according to the Journal.ie.

In January the ASAI issued new guidelines on advertising and that it would be monitoring social media influencers and bloggers.

Bloggers and Influencers must clearly state that they are being paid to promote or review a product by saying so in a blog post or adding hashtags like #spon or #ad to their posts.

Earlier this month popular Blogger Grace Mongey, who runs FacesByGrace had a complaint made against her over a snapchat post.

A member of the public felt the content on Snapchat had not been clearly identified as sponsored.

The 29-year-old posted several snaps on the app promoting Miss Fit Skinny Tea and posted three of them without a hashtag.

The ASAI reviewed the complaint and found that because snaps disappear, one snapchat in a sequence highlighting that it is a sponsored post is not enough, as it may disappear some time before the rest.

It said: “While the Committee considered that there was no evidence in this case that relevant consumers had not seen all the snaps, including those identifying that the snaps were advertising, they were aware that snaps were available to view for 24 hours only.”

Orla Twomey, chief executive of the ASAI told the Journal that she feels those not adhering to these rules are not doing so deliberately.

“I genuinely believe people don’t set out to deceive or not disclose, but it’s a new area and people are learning and improving practice as they go along. It’s very good to see that there had been such engagement among bloggers and blogging communities in this area.”

The results from the review of the 33 complaints so far will be released in August.
