Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey was on air with Dermot and Dave on Today FM today, and he told a hilarious story about when he spent some time in Dublin. He also did his best Irish accent and even tried his hand at the Irish language.

The Dallas Buyers Club star told the radio presenters about a time when he was in the capital with a friend, and they stopped to listen to a band singing a cover of Thin Lizzy’s Whiskey In The Jar.

He nailed the Irish accent!

“I had a wonderful time there. I was with my buddy Mark Norby. What’s the Metallica song that’s the cover of the old Irish? Yeah, Whiskey In The Jar.

“We met this great bloke on the north side of the Liffey. We were jamming one night and my buddy who loves Metallica (heard them) play that song, and he yells, ‘Yeah! Metallica!’

“The guy who was the lead singer of the band, we knew him quite well, and he goes, ‘You bloody yank, that’s not a bloody Metallica song. It’s been around for years, it’s ours,'” he said.

Almost as good as the real thing!

Dermot and Dave then went on to ask the academy award winning actor about his Irish heritage, and taught him some Irish sayings, including the classic “ah sure look it, isn’t that it.”

They also asked him to change up his signature “Alright, alright, alright” catchphrase, by reciting it as gaeilge, so he said “Ceart go leor, ceart go leor, ceart go leor,” and he did a great job!

Is there anything he can’t do? You can listen to the full interview here.
