Hundreds of mourners line the streets of the Liberties for funeral of comedian Brendan Grace

The funeral of much loved Irish comedian Brendan Grace took place in The Liberties area of Dublin 8 today.

Hundreds of mourners stepped out as the 68-year-old took his final journey to the Church of St Nicholas of Myra in Francis Street.

The Father Ted star died on Thursday following a short illness, and was given a fitting send off today in the area that he grew up in.

Stars such as Brendan O’Carroll, Anne Doyle, Marty Whelan and Dicky Rock were all in attendance at the mass today, with fans of the comedian lining the streets from early morning to pay their respects.

Brendan’s wife Eileen, his children and grandchildren all led the procession though The Liberties this afternoon – and his daughter Melissa recently gave a fitting tribute to her late father following his sad death.

Speaking on RTE’s LiveLine Melanie said, “It was extraordinary being his daughter.

“He had the kindest, kindest heart. He had heart enough both for his family and a nation and we’re just so proud of that. We were happy to share him.

“Offstage, although he absolutely made us laugh often, he was a different person and I loved that we got that person. Everyone else got the entertainer, we got a more vulnerable version of that.

“It was the comfort my mam gave him that made his passing so gentle. He promised that he would never leave us and we believe that to be true.”
