It is currently unknown when Gay Byrne will return to host his popular Lyric FM show as he continues to battle prostate cancer.
Just over a month ago, the 82-year-old told listeners of his Lyric FM show that doctors discovered cancer in his prostate that might have spread to his back.
“I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week.” he said. “Have to go to hospital this week, they think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back.”
The legendary broadcaster has been absent from his show ever since the announcement, with Aonghus McAnally standing in for him.
An RTE source has revealed there’s still no known date for his return in 2017.
“We don’t have a date for Gay returning in 2017.” The source told The Irish Sun. “We are all thinking about him and wishing him the very best with his recovery.”
Speaking recently about his cancer diagnosis, Gay said that he’s remaining positive and doesn’t see why he wouldn’t be able to beat the disease, like so many others have before him.
“You don’t have any choice but to have a positive outlook. You have to have the best outlook possible.” he told The Irish Sun.
“You have to remember there are a huge collection of fellas who have survived prostate cancer. They all survived and are doing well and why couldn’t that apply to me?”
