Fair City star Clelia Murphy, who plays Niamh on the popular RTE soap has announced that she will be leaving the show later this year.

The actress was a fan favourite for over 22 years, and RTE have now announced that she is moving on from her role as Niamh Brennan.

“Fair City can confirm that Clelia Murphy has decided to exit the soap for the foreseeable future with her character Niamh Brennan’s exiting storyline playing out on screen next month,” RTE said in a statement.

“Clelia has just completed the scenes for her character’s departure with a surprise twist in store for Paul.

“She’ll be greatly missed, but you never know when Niamh Brennan might reappear in Carrigstown to ruffle feathers like only she can!”

Clelia herself last night made a statement, calling her time in Carrigstown “an honour and a privilege”

“In [22 years] I’ve been lucky enough to have been part of some of Fair City’s most exciting and challenging storylines.

“Everything from being draped on bonnets of cars, to sparring with the indomitable Nicola (my bestie and my rock Claudia Carroll), to portraying a young terrified girl who had to take the boat to England.

“The highlight was without doubt the first ever soap two hander episode that Team Fair City shot this year. My fondest and proudest moment was being part of that.

Although there has been no official word on what Clelia will do next, rumours have been circulating that she will be competing in next year’s season of Dancing With The Star Ireland.

“We understand she’s leaving Fair City to take up another opportunity. On Dancing With The Stars, we’re not confirming the line-up yet.” an RTE spokesperson told The Irish Mirror.”
