Al Porter on why Today FM is a “better fit” for him than 2FM

2FM left him hanging for 5 months before he eventually cut the cord.

Al Porter has opened up about his new role as radio presenter on Today FM. The 23-year-old comedian started presenting the Monday-Friday lunchtime slot at the station last month.

Tallaght native Al was first heard on the airwaves when he co-presented the Drivetime show with Colm Hayes on 2FM. He had even been in negotiations with RTE to front his own show, but when nothing materialised he looked elsewhere.

Speaking to Tv Now Magazine Al said that he continues to have a great relationship with everyone in 2FM, but he had to choose what was best for him.

“I had a bit of a handcuff thing with 2FM where I was stuck out of loyalty, in that, they gave me my first ever radio gig. I really get on with Dan Healy and I liked all the people in there and I was just hanging around going what’s going to happen here.

“We were back and forth and, more and more, it just became apparent that Today FM would be a better fit for me; Today FM has a slightly older audience. Around Christmas time it was obvious that nothing was going to happen with 2FM, and I had already come around to the idea of Today FM.”

He's really enjoying his new show.

Although his new show is in its infancy Al is loving it. He’s enjoying chatting to the public and the positivity surrounding that.

“We’re only two weeks in and it feels like it has been around a while; it’s a chatty light lunch time show. I want to talk to punters; real people.

“The kind of chat with punters on radio that people are used to just involves people venting, and stirring them up and I couldn’t remember anybody in a long time Irish radio who was chatting to people out of pure curiosity in a kind of non patronising, positive way. It’s a fun show; we don’t have anybody coming on our show giving out,” he told Tv Now.
